Loyola University Maryland’s Communication Department

Loyola’s communication department is the home of students majoring in Digital Media, PR, Advertising and Journalism. Here, you can also find all of your professors offices where students often meet with them during their office hours. The laid back atmosphere attracts many students with varying majors to spend their afternoons studying in the department. To view Loyola’s Communication page, click here

Holiday Festivities

During the holiday season, the work study students love to decorate the department with festive decorations to get in the christmas spirit. This year, Shelby, the programming assistant helped the students decorate by creating Christmas decor and putting up a mini tree in the lobby of the department.

Meet Our Program Assistant

Shelby Ehret is the program assistant of the department. It is ultimately Shelby’s responsibility to make sure the department is running smoothly at all times. She is also in charge of all of the work study students.

Meet The Work Study Students

There are currently seven work study desk assistants. They are a very tight knit group of students who value their time working together. You can find them behind the front desk in the department. They are responsible for helping professors print, scan, make copies and conduct research.

Communication Courses

According to Loyola’s website, “The mission of the department of communication is to train ethical leaders well versed in the communication arts.” Although there are four specific majors, students also take courses in publishing, popular culture, media and society, free speech, public speaking, or research.

Media Labs

Many of the communications classes are taught in the department’s cutting-edge media technology labs. These labs are equipped with Mac desktop computers with the Adobe Suite and many other applications specific to communications. Often you can find students working in the lab late at night working on projects for their classes.

Clubs

There are many clubs that are closely related with the department. The communication department is home of clubs including the Greyhound student newspaper, WLOY radio station, GreyComm Television Studios, the Loyolapound.com online magazine, Apprentice House student-run book publishing company, Advertising Club, Public Relations Student Society of America, and Speech, Debate Team and the Evergreen Annual Yearbook Club.

Emilie Zuhowski writes for the Greyhound Newspaper. She stated, “The club is very much independent. Most of the contact with our editors is through email, and not at meetings.  I love writing for The Greyhound because I get to attend events, improve our journalistic skills and conduct prestigious interviews, I just actually interviewed Father Linnane. We are always looking for driven writers to join our team and contribute to our growing news organization!” Click here to view the Greyhound Newspaper’s website.

Professor Spotlight

Professor Sayo is one of the department’s most favorited professors. She has been working here for three years and actually graduated from Loyola a few years back. She teaches a variety of communications courses including Graphics, Web and many others.
