In Web II, students learn various applications of web and mobile site development along with creation of dataviz content for the Web. These applications include WordPress.Org, BootStrap, jQuery Mobile, and data visualization for the web. Please explore the top four listed items below to underwstand what you will learn in this course. WordPress

In WordPress Module, the following topics will be covered for the first five weeks of the semester:


Web Hosting & WordPress Installation

- Learn how to set up a WordPress site through a Web Hosting service.

Themes and Plugins

- How to do research on WordPress themes and plugins;
- How to edit, customize a theme;
- How to edit and customize theme layout with CSS and HTML, and JavaScript applications

Content

- How to organize pages with multimedia content and customized sidebar.

Maintenance and Monitoring

- SEO plugin;
- Integration of Google Analytics;
- Setting up account on Google's Webmaster Tool

Web Server Management

- how to create and manage FTP; and
- how to update the site through File Manager.

BootStrap

BootStrap is a framework of HTML, CSS and JavaScript to rapidly design and customize responsive mobile-first sites.

Students are expected to spend 3 - 4 weeks on this module to create a website with BootStrap.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Customizing Bootstrap to create a responsive website;
  • Publishing the site to a live web server.

    jQuery Mobile

    jQuery Mobile is a "HTML5-based user interface system designed to make responsive web sites and apps that are accessible on all smartphone, tablet and desktop devices." So this application can be utilized for both mobile-friendly website creation and smartphone apps.

    Instead of writing platform-specific applications, jQuery mobile framework is used to "design a single highly-branded responsive web site or application that will work on all popular smartphone, tablet, and desktop platforms."

    Learning Outcomes:

    In this module, students learn

  • Creating a layout theme with jQuery Mobile Themeroller
  • Developing a mobile website or app using own theme
  • Converting the site into an Android Package Kit (APK)
  • Test the app/.apk file in Google's Firebase Console
  • Example:

    DataViz for the Web

    Students use Datawrapper and/or Tableau to create data visualization for websites. Additionally, students learn the techniques of cleaning and preparing dataset with spreadsheets such as Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel for visualization.

    Learning Outcomes:

  • Identifying publicly-available authoriative sources of data and obtaining data from these sources;
  • Understanding and interviewing the dataset to identify a story;
  • Cleaning and organizing the dataset for visualization; and
  • Publishing mobile-optimized visualization for a website; and
  • Interpreting the dataviz in the form of a short web story.
